Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
